The history of the Steelers can be traced back to a regional professional team established in the early 1920s. It joined the National Football League (NFL) as the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 8, 1933, and was owned by Art Rooney. The "Pirates" team name came from the baseball team of the same name, which was very common among NFL teams at the time. In order to distinguish it from the baseball team, the local media began to call the football team "Rooneymen". This unofficial nickname lasted decades after the team adopted the current team name. The Steelers have belonged to the Rooney family since its inception. Art Rooney's son Dan Rooney owned the team from 1988 until his death in 2017. Dan Rooney's son Art Rooney II inherited the team from his father. The Steelers also won a large and extensive fan base, nicknamed "The Country of Steel". Currently, the Steelers play their home games at Heinz near the north coast of Pittsburgh, which is also home to the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. Heinz Stadium was built in 2001 and replaced the Three Rivers Stadium (Three Rivers Stadium), the home stadium of the Steelers for the past 31 seasons, as the new home stadium. Before using Three Rivers Stadium as their home field, the Steelers also played at Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field.
